SUMMARY:Sandhill Crane Watch Party January 29 with Coastal Prairie Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:Each winter\, the Katy Prairie becomes home to flocks of birds fleeing cooler climates for the season. Join local birding enthusiasts to see one of the most charismatic of these species\, the sandhill crane\, come in to roost on the prairie for the evening. You also will see waterfowl and other birds! $20 registration fee. \nMeet at 4:00 PM at the Indiangrass Preserve Field Office. The group will be leaving promptly at 4:15 PM. The cranes sometimes shift their roost sites a bit\, so our guides will be scouting within a few days of the field trip to determine a good viewing location. Depending on where that is\, we may be doing a bit of driving over field roads\, but not rough ones (we can combine into vehicles best suited for this). Bring binoculars and camera and dress in camouflage or dark colors; a spotting scope could be helpful. Space is limited\, so reserve your spot today!

DESCRIPTION:2026 Water Wonks Hour Lecture Series #1: Soil carbon analysis process\, the USDA 2022 soil carbon survey\, working with urban areas and the San Antonio baseline soil carbon data – where do we go from here? \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Travis Waiser MLRA (Major Land Resource Area) Soil Survey Leader at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. \nBio: Travis graduated Texas A&M University in 2003 with a B.S. in Agronomy and Rangeland Ecology and Management.  He continued his education receiving his Master of Science in Soil Science from Texas A&M University in May 2006.  He started as a Soil Scientist with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) in January 2005 and has worked throughout Texas sampling and describing soils and spent time in Oklahoma and Louisiana on detail work.  Travis moved to Kerrville from College Station in July 2010 where he now serves as the Edwards Plateau and Central Basin Soil Survey Leader for NRCS.  His office covers over 26 million acres of Central and West Texas.Synopsis:  In 2022\, the Natural Resource Conservation Service began sampling soils in San Antonio and Bexar County\, Texas to measure soil organic carbon. This project was started in conjunction with the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance and the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department. Travis Waiser will cover the sampling technique\, where samples were taken\, and summarize the data collected from the project. At the end of the talk Travis will cover some management strategies that can be implemented to build soil carbon in your soils. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStay tuned for additional monthly lecture topics coming in 2026!

SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday at the TreeFolks Nursery
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, TreeFolks embarked on a new project that will greatly enhance our mission and allow us to plant more trees! \nWe started our own native tree nursery where we are growing saplings and bigger trees in pots. The success of this project will rely heavily on volunteer involvement during both the continuing construction phase and day-to-day operation. You can help with shade structure construction\, soil sifting and mixing\, plant bands preparation\, seed sorting and cleaning\, sowing and transplanting\, and more. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the propagation of woody species native to our region while contributing your time and effort to a worthy cause of growing more trees. \nPlease bring a water bottle\, dress for working outdoors\, and take breaks when you need to! \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please contact Gillian: volunteer@treefolks.org\, (512) 761-8738\, cell

SUMMARY:Sandhill Crane Watch Party January 15\, 22\, 29 with Coastal Prairie Conservancy
