SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Winter Birds on the Barton Creek Greenbelt with Save Texas Streams
DESCRIPTION:Meet us at mile zero of the Barton Creek Greenbelt at 8:30 am\, January 31st for a beginner-friendly bird walk. We will have a couple of binoculars to borrow\, but you are encouraged to bring your own. I will go over some binocular fundamentals before walking and stopping along the trail to listen to and see some birds. Expect to hike for 1.5 miles and some of that might be in the dry creek bed. \nYou will learn about the winter crew of birds that are seasonally here and the residents who are here year-around. \nThe walk will be led by Save Texas Streams’ Board Vice President and Capital Area Master Naturalist\, Andrew Harrod. Andrew graduated with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries\, has led many bird walks at McKinney Falls State Park\, and helps out with annual winter bird censuses that take place locally.

SUMMARY:Sandhill Crane Watch Party January 29 with Coastal Prairie Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:Each winter\, the Katy Prairie becomes home to flocks of birds fleeing cooler climates for the season. Join local birding enthusiasts to see one of the most charismatic of these species\, the sandhill crane\, come in to roost on the prairie for the evening. You also will see waterfowl and other birds! $20 registration fee. \nMeet at 4:00 PM at the Indiangrass Preserve Field Office. The group will be leaving promptly at 4:15 PM. The cranes sometimes shift their roost sites a bit\, so our guides will be scouting within a few days of the field trip to determine a good viewing location. Depending on where that is\, we may be doing a bit of driving over field roads\, but not rough ones (we can combine into vehicles best suited for this). Bring binoculars and camera and dress in camouflage or dark colors; a spotting scope could be helpful. Space is limited\, so reserve your spot today!

SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday at the TreeFolks Nursery
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, TreeFolks embarked on a new project that will greatly enhance our mission and allow us to plant more trees! \nWe started our own native tree nursery where we are growing saplings and bigger trees in pots. The success of this project will rely heavily on volunteer involvement during both the continuing construction phase and day-to-day operation. You can help with shade structure construction\, soil sifting and mixing\, plant bands preparation\, seed sorting and cleaning\, sowing and transplanting\, and more. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the propagation of woody species native to our region while contributing your time and effort to a worthy cause of growing more trees. \nPlease bring a water bottle\, dress for working outdoors\, and take breaks when you need to! \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please contact Gillian: volunteer@treefolks.org\, (512) 761-8738\, cell

SUMMARY:Neighbors Planting trees at Bethany Cemetery with TreeFolks
DESCRIPTION:TreeFolks is partnering with the Bethany Cemetery Association and Black Austin Tours to plant trees in Bethany Cemetery. This is a precious 6-acre green space in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. Many ancient trees were lost in the recent hailstorm and need to be replaced. TreeFolks is planting and providing follow-up care for three years and helping to reverse historic inequities in funding and resources in the Eastern Crescent. \nOur events are family-friendly\, and no experience or tools are needed. We will train everyone at the beginning of the event\, and provide all tools\, materials\, gloves\, water\, and snacks. \nVolunteers will have an opportunity to tour the cemetery during the event with Black Austin Tours. \nBethany Cemetery is Austin’s oldest Black cemetery. The Mission of the Bethany Cemetery Association\, Inc. is to preserve and protect the rich historic heritage of Bethany Cemetery. We are dedicated to preserving the history through preservation and community engagement.  Contact:  bethanycemeteryofaustin@gmail.com \nTreeFolks engages thousands of volunteers and community groups to plant trees in public parks\, preserves\, and schoolyards. We also distribute free trees\, provide free education\, and offer large-scale reforestation services. Our mission is to empower Central Texans to build stronger communities through planting and caring for trees. Contact: volunteer@treefolks.org \nBlack Austin Tours was founded by Dr. Javier Wallace\, a native Austinite with deep roots in the city. A Ph.D. graduate from the University of Texas at Austin\, Javier combined his passion for history and his commitment to the community to create Black Austin Tours in 2019. Each of our guides has a strong background in history\, a connection to Austin through their education\, and\, most importantly\, a shared love for this city and the stories it holds. We’re excited to share them with you. Contact: julia@blackaustintours.com \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but you must register to attend. SUMMARY:GALVESTON BAY FOUNDATION Holiday Craft Party: Upcycle with Marine Debris
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the season and support cleaner shorelines by joining the Galveston Bay Foundation’s Water Protection Marine Debris team for a creative afternoon of upcycling using debris collected during GBF’s Marine Debris surveys. \nYou will transform these materials\, once harmful to wildlife and habitats\, into meaningful gifts or decorations you can keep for yourself like holiday crafts\, cards\, ornaments\, and rain chains. \nYou can also create a personal monofilament and nurdle collection container which you can use on your own to remove plastics and fishing line from reentering local waterways. \nBy turning marine debris into art\, you will help raise awareness about plastic pollution\, support ongoing citizen science efforts\, and inspire others to care for Galveston Bay. \nThis is a relaxed\, seated volunteer opportunity. All materials will be provided\, but you are welcome to bring your own decorative items such as beads\, stickers\, or pens to personalize your creations. \nStaff will provide a short demonstration and discussion about how these materials affect the Bay and how volunteers can continue making a difference throughout the year. \nLearn More at nurdlepatrol.org and texasseagrant.org. \nClick here to learn about getting to and parking at GBF Headquarters in Kemah. \nClick Here to Join Us!
