SUMMARY:Water Wonks Lecture Series #5
DESCRIPTION:Join Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance for their May installment of their Water Wonks series\, which will focus on the regional flood planning process and why conserving floodplains are important. \nAnnalisa Peace (GEAA Executive Director) and Debbie Reid (GEAA Technical Director) will explain the Texas Water Development Board’s regional flood planning process\, which will allocate state funds for flood mitigation strategies and provides opportunities to employ green infrastructure and land conservation strategies. The video by David Skuodas (Director of Design\, Construction\, and Maintenance at the Mile High Flood District) presents his analysis of why governments are often playing catch-up to pay for maintenance of stormwater channels\, basins\, and other structures. In many cases\, it would take hundreds or thousands of years for a city to collect enough taxes to pay to adequately maintain drainage infrastructure from new development. Mr. Skuodas advocates for working with the existing natural stream channels\, maintaining flood resiliency and water quality\, protecting public safety\, and saving taxpayers money.

SUMMARY:Water Wonks Lecture Series #6
DESCRIPTION:Join Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance for their June installment of their Water Wonks series\, which will focus on Transportation\, Growth\, and Planning in the Greater San Antonio Region. \nDevelopment in San Antonio\, Austin\, and the Hill Country is growing at such a rate that it seems like the only thing left to do is decide on what we’re going to call the all-encompassing metroplex (Greater San Antonio? ASA? Sanstin?) Don’t worry about the name too much – with the population in this area expected to grow to over 8 million people by 2050\, there are a variety of transportation\, housing\, and resource issues that still need addressing. In this session\, we’ll review local\, state\, and federal transportation planning policies and processes and discuss how the region can responsibly prepare for future development.

SUMMARY:Purple Martin Workshop - Travis Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to know more about Purple Martins\, how to set up a colony\, and be a Purple Martin landlord? Are you an existing landlord wanting to meet other Martin aficionados and learn tips? Have you always wanted to be a citizen scientist\, gathering useful data that can help Martin conservation efforts? If so\, this Purple Martin Workshop is for you. \nThe first Purple Martins typically arrive in Austin at the end of January\, so this class will give you information you can put to use right away\, either at your own colony\, or observing Martins at Hornsby Bend or any other existing colony. \nThis class will focus on the life cycle of Purple Martins and how you can participate as a Purple Martin landlord or helper. You will learn the maintenance routine recommended by the Purple Martin Conservation Association. You will also learn how to record and send in nesting data that is compiled nationally. We will also go outside to do hands-on nest preparation and discussion. Class participants are invited to participate through mid-June as helpers and observers as the class teachers maintain and record the Purple Martin season. Later in the summer\, we will invite class members to join us in educating others at our giant Purple Martin parties. \nCourse instructors Andy and Julia Balinsky have been the Purple Martin stewards since 2003. They have watched over 3000 Purple Martin babies fledge during that time. They have also spent many evenings watching the Martin pre-migration staging roost in the late summer. \nThis class will be in-person at the Hornsby Bend Center for Environmental Research. No virtual option is available. Class participants should plan to take notes. You’re welcome to bring your own snacks or lunch.

SUMMARY:2025 Water Wonks Hour Lecture Series #2
DESCRIPTION:Join GEAA and Chandler Crouch\, a civil engineer with nearly a decade of experience in Texas’ water industry\, for an insightful presentation on the Net Zero Water strategy. He will also introduce the Net Zero Water Toolkit\, a resource from Texas Water Trade that guides developers and property owners in implementing onsite water reuse systems. \nWith examples from Central Texas\, this session will showcase proven technologies and provide practical insights on the design\, permitting\, and maintenance of Net Zero Water systems. Don’t miss the chance to learn how sustainable water management can help ensure a water-secure future for Texas.

SUMMARY:Green Leaders Fellow Workday - Native Plant Garden Installation
DESCRIPTION:EarthShare Texas Fellow Emily Hutcheson is leading a native plant garden installation at Mark Twain Dual Language Academy Preschool Campus on March 1st. Please join us as we create a pollinator garden and a wildflower prairie. \nThe pollinator garden will be near the front entrance of the school to welcome winged creatures as well as children and their families as they enter school in the morning. The wildflower prairie will be located alongside the school so that the whole neighborhood can have increased access to beautiful green spaces\, and local wildlife can find more habitat and food sources. The workday will take place at 518 E. Magnolia Avenue from 9 am to noon. We will be digging and planting\, so bring your shovel and gloves and prepare to get dirty! (We will have extra shovels if you don’t have one.) Thanks to support from Bat Conservation International and Bexar County Audubon Society\, we will install two phases of ecosystem renewal at the school\, which is new to the Mark Twain Dual Language Academy family. \n*Google might tell you that this is Rafael Gonzales Early Childhood Education Center\, but that is outdated information. Make sure you don’t end up at the main campus\, on San Pedro Avenue\, but if you do it’s ok because you are only one mile away.
