Texas Public Citizen State Capitol TCEQ Sunset Bill HB 1505

Get involved with Public Citizen as they convene at the Texas State Capitol March 23rd.

The Texas House Committee on Environmental Regulation will hold a hearing on the TCEQ Sunset Bill (HB 1505). The bill proposes reforms to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the state’s main environmental regulatory agency.

The TCEQ Sunset Bill is the culmination of over a year-long process known as the ‘Sunset Review,’ the state’s process for evaluating its agencies about every 12 years. A report generated by the state as part of this review labeled the TCEQ a “reluctant regulator” for its ineffectiveness in holding polluters accountable. The current version of the TCEQ Sunset Bill includes favorable provisions such as extending maximum daily fines for polluters and modest improvements to the agency’s engagement and communication with the public.
