The Impact of Outdoor Education on Student Academic and Social Outcomes

Every year, thousands of students participate in adventure-based stewardship curriculum at IDEA Camp RIO, located in deep South Texas. IDEA Public Schools has partnered with the East Foundation in a three-year study designed to measure the short– and long-term impact of students’ time at camp on their interests in natural resources and land stewardship, academic achievement and well-being, and college and career choices in the natural sciences. We are excited to share more behind the purpose of this research, the methods and measures used in the study design, pivots we’ve made during virtual camp lessons and learning due to Covid restrictions, and some of the trends we are seeing in data results after two years.
