This Earth Month, EarthShare Texas wants everyone to be the best environmentalist they can be. Here are 7 helpful (everyday) tips from our #MyEarthMyTexas sponsor Reliant, an NRG company, to get you started.

1. Set Your Thermostat to Auto

Around 40% of home electric bills are related to A/C and Heating. Set the A/C to auto to prevent the A/C from constant use.

Reliant Energy Tip - Use Fans

2. SET CEILING FANS TO ROTATE COUNTERCLOCKWISE

In Spring and especially Summer, set your ceiling fans counterclockwise to help make the room 4 degrees cooler! Remember to turn fans off: fans cool people, but not the overall temperature.

3. ONLY WASH FULL LOADS OF DISHES OR LAUNDRY

Wash full loads to help save water and energy.

Reliant Energy Tip - Use Microwave

4. CHOOSE THE MICROWAVE OR CROCK POT FOR COOKING

Cook food with a microwave or crock pot to be more energy efficient. (Plus you’ll save yourself from the heat by not running the oven.)

5. AIR DRY THE DISHES

Leave the dishwasher open after the final rinse to save energy. Or…set your dishwasher to its cool-dry cycle to conserve energy and create less heat within the house.

Reliant Energy Tip - Use Cold Water

6. WASH LAUNDRY WITH COLD WATER

90% of energy use from washing machines comes from heating the water. Wash laundry with cold water to conserve more energy.

7. USE AN OVEN FOR FOOD PREP

In an effort to heat the oven little as possible in the hot months, only use the oven for food prep.
