In the first installment of our “What’s Your Why” series, we’re honored to spotlight Kellie Fichter, the Office Manager and Special Projects professional at the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance (GEAA). Through our partnership, we’ve been able to amplify GEAA’s vital work, raising public awareness about the critical environmental issues they are tackling across Texas. By working together, we’re driving a larger movement toward a healthier and more sustainable future for our communities and ecosystems. In this interview, Kellie shares more about her experience in the green workforce, the impact of GEAA’s initiatives, and the collaborative efforts that make it all possible. Read on to hear her insights!

What inspired you to get involved in environmental work?

Out of college, I began working in the waste hauling industry, where I got a rather disturbing inside view of the volume of waste being created and the lack of effort to reduce it. I became involved in what was, at the time, beginning efforts to provide recycling services for businesses and residents. After that, my career took me outside of the environmental world, but I always had a passion for it and have stepped back in with my role beginning last year as the Office Manager at GEAA.

Why did you choose to work with/join GEAA? When did you start?

I chose to join my organization because I felt like protecting and preserving our water resources was important work and something I would be proud to be a part of. I started January 2023.

What motivates you to continue working on these environmental issues?

We are seeing the threat of constant development in our region and need to work harder than ever to encourage responsible sustainable growth.

If you could tell people one reason they should care about environmental protection, what would it be?

Overexploitation of natural resources can lead to scarcity and negative impacts on our public health. Sustainable practices ensure that future generations have access to clean water, fertile land, and other essential resources.

What do you hope your work will achieve for future generations?

By prioritizing water conservation and management, we instill values of sustainability and responsibility in future generations, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.

How has being part of the EarthShare Texas network amplified your impact?

Our impact has been amplified as part of our membership with EarthShare Texas in a number of ways but not limited to: Resource sharing: such as providing an outlet for event promotion, job postings. Collective Advocacy: by uniting all the various environmental nonprofits, our collective voice is enhanced. Their work to raise public awareness about environmental issues and the work of our organization and many others across the state provides a broader reach for all of us. Fundraising support: by facilitating workplace giving campaigns and other funding opportunities, EarthShare Texas plays an important role in helping us sustain our mission.
